Vitamin D and the story of Collagenous Colitis

-A response to my personal story “How I got Chronic Urticaria, Treated and cured myself”

…You sound like me several years ago. I was diagnosed with Collagenous Colitis and told they didn’t know what caused it or what to do about it, and that there was no cure!

I started researching Collagenous Colitis and found out that many times it’s caused by antibiotics which cause leaky gut. It means my colon is lined with collagen and I don’t absorb the liquids in it. Also, NSAIDs can cause it. I have been taking NSAIDs for over 10 years on prescription. I had also been on many antibiotics including Cipro- 19 times in eight years.

I also had inflammation so bad I could hardly walk or move. Their best advice was to take steroids which I refused because I didn’t want to “balloon up” like the Goodyear blimp, because I had just successfully lost 150 pounds and I wasn’t going to go backward.

And then…

When I got started on vitamin D3, vitamin K2, and magnesium for the first time my inflammation markers were normal in just a few months so I figured if I could do that with a few supplements. I was going to fix my colitis! And keep in mind my doctor said: “there is no way you can take magnesium, it’s nothing but a laxative”. This is coming from a Gastro doctor and of course, he thinks magnesium is a laxative- that’s what he recommends to clean yourself out before a colonoscopy.

I started researching leaky gut and since I had also taken PPIs for over 10 years I figured if it really existed I had it! I’m supposed to have diarrhea 24 hours a day seven days a week for the rest my life and I was told there was nothing they could do about it? Well, I could do something about it and I did. I don’t have diarrhea 24/7 even though I take over 2500 mg of magnesium every day with no problems!

That is why I am so adamant about the fact that you have to heal your whole body and not just one little spot like pharmaceuticals supposedly do. Everything has to work together for anything to work.

I am never sick and haven’t been in years, even eating after my granddaughter when she had strep throat three times on a daily basis and I didn’t get sick! This is because my vitamin D levels are above 100 ng! No other reason whatsoever! In order to be able to absorb your nutrients, you have to heal your gut so that you absorb them! And you have to eat real food- healthy food that is what is going to nourish your body!


Reasons for using supplements

…my doctor told me I was slightly vitamin D deficient. Slightly meant a level of 24 ng. Only after looking back over my previous lab work yours before I had been deficient for at least 10 years and I asked her why she was just getting around to telling me I was vitamin D deficient? Her answer was they didn’t know there was any such thing as a vitamin D deficiency!

And of course being in the US she prescribed me vitamin D2 50,000 IU once a week- which will never raise your levels it may cause Alzheimer’s but it won’t raise your levels. I took this for four months and never budged. That’s when I decided to turn to Facebook and find out what I could find out about a vitamin D deficiency.

I joined a group and found out I needed to be taking vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 in an oil-based carrier in order to raise my levels and that I needed to be taking it daily, not weekly and I also needed to be taking magnesium and lots of it! While vitamin D3 helps you absorb calcium from your diet, vitamin K2 directs your body to deposit the calcium in the appropriate places. In other words, it’s the vitamin K2 that tells your body to deposit calcium in your bones and teeth, and not in your organs, arteries, muscles or soft tissue.

An effective analogy is that vitamin D3 is your gatekeeper, allowing the admission of calcium, and vitamin K2 is the traffic cop, telling the calcium where to go. With vitamin D3 and calcium you’ll have the traffic, but without vitamin K2 you’ll have a traffic jam and calcium being deposited exactly where you don’t want it — in your arteries. Then magnesium keeps it there!

Same story finding out I was B12 deficient and nothing was being done about it! I couldn’t get out of bed, I hurt so bad and I was so tired that I was sleeping 16 hours a day- I had no life! After studying to take the correct supplements and firing my PCP, my levels went up to 119 ng!- 119 ng being my vitamin D levels. I was able to go to the gym every day for two hours and work out plus babysit my newborn granddaughter daily. And I was able to get by on 6 hours sleep instead of 16! I had more energy than I knew what to do with and I started helping other people solve their medical issues and get well.
